History of St. Martin Mission
St. Martin Mission traces its origins to a small wooden church originally built in 1905 as part of the Woodland Parish. In 1944 that Madison church — already known as St. Martin's — was physically moved to Esparto, where a new front entrance and doors were added. It was formally dedicated on May 29, 1945 by the Most Rev. Robert Armstrong, Bishop of Sacramento, and constituted as a mission of the Catholic Church at Davis, then under the pastorate of Rev. Joseph Madden. The wider Winters–Davis–Madison–Capay–Guinda parish had been established on January 1, 1913 with Rev. J. F. Quinn as first pastor and about 100 members. St. Martin remains today a small bilingual mission within that regional Catholic family, now staffed through St. Anthony Parish in Winters.
