History & Parish Mergers
St. Martha was a stand-alone parish in Enfield for decades, serving Catholics on the Brainard Road / northern Enfield side of town. As part of Archbishop Leonard P. Blair's sweeping 2017 pastoral plan, St. Martha, St. Patrick, and St. Adalbert were merged into St. Raymond of Peñafort Parish; that merger was undone within months due to worship-style conflicts, making St. Martha the only parish in the Archdiocese of Hartford to be separated from an established merger under the plan. In May 2017 the Archdiocese announced an updated plan to consolidate all three Enfield parishes — St. Jeanne Jugan (already a 2017 merger of Holy Family and St. Bernard), St. Raymond of Peñafort, and St. Martha — into one townwide parish. On October 21, 2022 Archbishop Blair issued the formal decree, and on November 22, 2022 St. Martha officially became a campus of the newly expanded Saint Jeanne Jugan Parish.
