History of St. Luke’s

The history of Saint Luke’s is tied to the broader history of seven parishes that served the Catholic population of north-central Pine County. The area saw early settlement after the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux in 1851, with towns like Sandstone, Duquette, and others growing along railroads. The first church in the region may have been built in Duquette in the late 1800s, named Saint Francis Xavier, and was later closed around 1960. Saint Luke’s itself evolved from this legacy, serving the Catholic faithful in Sandstone and surrounding areas.
