History

St. Lucy was established in 1965, just two years before the Diocese of Fresno itself was canonically erected on October 6, 1967. At that time the parish community was small and rural; early Official Catholic Directory records show that St. Lucy's in Fowler was originally classified as a mission of St. Katherine's Church in Del Rey, the mother church for the area. As Fowler's Catholic population grew, St. Lucy's took on its own identity and developed a vibrant bilingual liturgical life — a tradition it continues today, with the majority of weekday Masses and two of its four Sunday Masses celebrated in Spanish.

The Patroness: Saint Lucy of Syracuse

The parish takes its name from Saint Lucy (Santa Lucía) of Syracuse, one of the most beloved virgin martyrs of the early Church. According to tradition, Lucy was born around 283 AD in Syracuse, Sicily, and was martyred in 304 AD during the Diocletianic Persecution. She is one of the few women explicitly named in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I) of the Mass. Because later accounts describe her eyes being torn out before her death — and miraculously restored at her burial — she has been venerated for centuries as the patroness of the blind and of those suffering from diseases of the eye. Her name, derived from the Latin 'lux' (light), makes her a natural patroness for a parish in the rural San Joaquin Valley, where her feast on December 13 brings light into the darkest days of the year.

  • Born c. 283 AD in Syracuse, Sicily
  • Died 304 AD, martyred under the Diocletianic Persecution
  • Named in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I)
  • Feast day: December 13
  • Patroness of the blind, of eye diseases, of writers, and of Syracuse
