History
St. Lucien was established in 1938 after Bishop William Hafey of the Diocese of Raleigh directed in 1935 that a local priest prepare a house in Spruce Pine as a chapel. With support from the Catholic Extension Society and the Glenmary Missioners, what began as a single room was expanded into a proper church. The parish went on to serve the mountain counties of Yancey, Avery and Mitchell, and for decades it mothered mission churches in the area, including Sacred Heart Mission in Burnsville. A new St. Lucien church was dedicated by Bishop Peter Jugis in 2005 as part of a wave of church dedications across the Diocese of Charlotte.
