Why belong here

St. Jude Shrine of the West is a long-standing bilingual Catholic community rooted in San Diego's Southcrest/Shelltown neighborhoods, where nearly every Mass is celebrated in Spanish alongside an English Sunday liturgy — making it a natural home for Latino Catholic families and English-speakers who want to worship together. The parish is named for St. Jude, patron of desperate and 'lost cause' cases, and centers its devotional life on a weekly Tuesday-evening St. Jude Novena and weekday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Families benefit from religious education, the parish-managed child-care center, and a campus that includes Bishop Maher Hall for community events. As one of only six designated Jubilee Shrines in the Diocese of San Diego, it also draws pilgrims who come to pray at its Holy Door during special Jubilee years.

Parish History

What is now St. Jude Shrine of the West began in 1946 when Father Joseph C. de Cristina purchased a building at the northeast corner of South 38th Street and Boston Avenue for the first Mass. The church was soon moved to the southwest corner of the intersection. Two years later, in 1948, St. Jude Academy was established with School Sisters of Notre Dame from St. Louis staffing it; classes began in repurposed World War II Navy barracks brought onto the property.

Jubilee Shrine and Holy Door

In 2015, Bishop Robert W. McElroy designated St. Jude as one of six Jubilee Shrines in the Diocese of San Diego for the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis in Misericordiae Vultus. The parish opened its Holy Door on Sunday, December 13, 2015. During a Jubilee Year, the faithful may obtain a plenary indulgence by passing through a designated Holy Door, making confession and communion, praying for the Pope's intentions, and being free from attachment to sin. GCatholic also lists the parish as one of the Jubilee Churches in the diocese for 2016.
