History & Significance

Shrine · Est. Established June 30, 1961

The Shrine Church of St. Jude in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn was established on June 30, 1961, by Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart of the Diocese of Brooklyn to serve the area's rapid post-World War II growth. Fr. Rosario Pitrone was named the first and founding pastor, and the first Masses were celebrated July 9, 1961, in the Canarsie Theater before permanent facilities were built. It remains an active parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn at 1677 Canarsie Road, and is the only shrine church in the diocese dedicated to St. Jude, patron of impossible causes.
