St. Jude Mission: A Historic Mountain Catholic Church

St. Jude Mission (also listed by the Diocese of Boise as 'St. Jude's Station') is a small Roman Catholic mission church at 1056 Banks Lowman Road in Garden Valley, Idaho. Tucked into the Boise Mountains along the Banks–Lowman corridor, it serves the Catholic families of Garden Valley, Crouch, and the surrounding communities of Boise County. Father Germán Rebollo currently ministers to the community, celebrating Mass each Sunday at noon.

History of St. Jude's

Catholic worship on this site stretches back more than 130 years. The first church was built between 1889 and 1892 under the name Immaculate Conception Church; it was destroyed by fire in 1930 when an overheated stove caught the building. A replacement church was built in 1931–1932 at a cost of $2,200 and rededicated under the patronage of St. Jude, the apostle known as the patron saint of hopeless or desperate causes. Major repairs in 1980 were followed by the addition of a parish hall and well, and in the summer of 2018 the entire exterior and roof of the church were replaced.

  • 1889–1892: Original Immaculate Conception Church built on this site.
  • 1901: Visiting priests from Boise and neighboring parishes begin regular service to the valley.
  • 1930: Original church destroyed by fire (overheated stove).
  • 1931–1932: Present church built for $2,200, placed under the patronage of St. Jude.
  • 1980: Extensive repairs to the church; parish hall and well added.
  • Summer 2018: Full exterior renovation and new roof.

Patron: St. Jude Thaddaeus

When the church was rebuilt after the 1930 fire, it was placed under the patronage of St. Jude Thaddaeus, one of the twelve apostles and the saint traditionally invoked in difficult or seemingly hopeless situations. His feast day is celebrated on October 28, alongside St. Simon.
