Why belong here

St. Joseph Mission brings the Eucharist and sacraments to a quiet stretch of the Oregon coast that otherwise has no nearby Catholic parish. Worshippers gather as a small, multi-generational community of dairy-farm and fishing families, retirees, and visitors — a place where everyone is quickly known by name. The mission is supported by the wider Sacred Heart parish community in Tillamook, which shares its pastor, religious-education program, altar societies, and signature events like the Old Fashioned Christmas Bazaar, the Crab Feed, Vacation Bible School, and the outdoor Stations of the Cross on Good Friday.

History of St. Joseph Mission Parish

St. Joseph Mission Parish traces its roots to the early 1920s, when Catholic dairy-farming and pioneer families in the lower Tillamook County coast needed a church of their own. Its building was dedicated on Saturday, August 13, 1922, and exactly one hundred years later — on August 13, 2022 — the parish celebrated its centennial. From its earliest days, the mission was tied to Sacred Heart Parish in Tillamook (founded 1891), and for many decades the Catholic parishes of Tillamook County were served by the Benedictine Fathers of Mount Angel Abbey. The most famous of these was Father Augustine DeNoble of Mount Angel, who grew up on a local dairy farm and compiled the historical record "Deaths and Burials of the Catholic Church Sacred Heart Parish, Tillamook, Oregon 1860-1932."
