History

Since 1834, St. Joseph Neier Parish has been blessed with spiritual tradition. The first wooden church, built 1846–1848, served as a church, school, and lodging for missionaries. A new stone church was built in 1868. The tower and steeple were completed in 1897, and a slate roof added later. In 1961, a sacristy was added; in the 1970s, carpeting and air conditioning were installed. A major renovation began in 1998 and was completed. St. Joseph School was built in 1892, with parish families hauling bricks from Washington, Missouri. The school was razed in 2006, and the current Parish Center now serves as a gathering place and classrooms.
