History & Catholic School Legacy
For more than a century St. Joseph's was home to a parish school. In its early years more than 300 students were taught by the Benedictine Sisters of Duluth and later of Crookston. In 1985 St. Joseph School became the first Catholic school in the Diocese of Crookston to be fully accredited by the Minnesota School Accrediting Association. In the late 1970s the parish chose to phase out grades 7 and 8; those grades were never reinstated. By 2010 enrollment had fallen to about 20 students in K–6, and the Diocese of Crookston decided to close the school, with a closing Mass on May 26 and an all-school reunion scheduled for July 25 during Red Lake Falls' Summerfest.
