About Hysham & Treasure County
Hysham is a tiny town of about 276 people (2020 census) on the high plains of southeastern Montana, named for Charlie J. Hysham, who managed the Flying E cattle ranch in the region. The town grew from a Northern Pacific Railroad siding after the area opened to homesteading in 1906, and was officially incorporated in 1916. As the seat of Treasure County — one of Montana's least-populated counties — Hysham serves a broad ranching and farming community, and St. Joseph Mission provides the Catholic faithful of the area with a regular place of worship close to home.
