Historical Context: Catholic Life in the Globe-Miami Area
St. Joseph Mission stands in a region with a rich Catholic missionary heritage. Catholics in the Miami and Globe areas were first served officially by Catholic missionaries in 1876, when visiting priests from Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Florence traveled to minister to the mining communities. Bishop Peter Bourgade of the newly formed Diocese of Tucson later transferred authority of the local Catholic mission to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Solomonville in 1891, with circuit-riding priests administering the sacraments throughout the copper country. The mother parish of this family — Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Miami — was dedicated on July 1, 1917 by Bishop Granjon, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 2, 2008. St. Joseph Mission continues this legacy of bringing the sacraments to the small communities scattered along Highway 60.
