Why belong here

St. Joseph's is a small, historic mission church where the Sunday 8:00 AM Mass is celebrated in a tight-knit, multi-generational community rooted in the Czech Catholic heritage of Pine County. The mission field is shepherded by a full-time resident pastor who celebrates Mass daily and hears confessions regularly, and parishioners are warmly invited into shared ministries — Rosary Makers, Prayer Chain, Legion of Mary, Religious Education, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic in Recovery — that draw the two churches of Pine City and Beroun together as one family of faith.

The stated mission is: 'With Christ as it's center and empowered by the Holy Spirit in union with Mary, Mother of the Church, the mission of Immaculate Conception Parish is to be an evangelizing community that teaches, sanctifies, and serves the people of God.'

History of St. Joseph's, Beroun

St. Joseph's traces its origins to October 25, 1896, when a group of Czech Catholics met at the home of town founder Joseph Chalupsky to organize a church. The railroad donated a plot of land, the settlers built a modest 18-by-30-foot structure for $168, and the first Mass was celebrated on December 26, 1896. Growth was rapid: a second, larger church was built by 1902, and a permanent brick church — the building still in use today — was completed in 1927 at a cost of $35,000 under the parish's first resident priest, Fr. William Guilfoyle, who arrived in 1926. The town of Beroun itself is named after a village in Czechoslovakia, and the church's Praha Avenue address continues to honor that Czech heritage. Today St. Joseph's is a mission of Immaculate Conception Parish in Pine City, sharing one pastor and one mission field within the Diocese of Duluth.

  • 1896 — parish organized; first Mass December 26, 1896
  • 1902 — second church built
  • 1926 — Fr. William Guilfoyle becomes first resident priest
  • 1927 — present brick church completed ($35,000)
