History of St. Joseph Parish
St. Joseph's Catholic Church traces its origin to 1872 and the early Catholic settlement of the Marlin area in Falls County. The parish's first decades were closely linked to Polish immigrants who came to farm along the Brazos River. According to regional Polish-Texan histories, Father Joseph Mosiewicz — recruited by Bishop Claude Dubuis from France and ordained in the Galveston Diocese on March 12, 1875 — was serving Marlin and the nearby community of Bremond by June 1, 1877, with Marlin as his residence during much of that period. In 1883 the original Marlin church and rectory were destroyed by fire, and Father Mosiewicz later died of burns from that fire. The present Catholic church on Oaks Street in Marlin carries on that legacy, now under the Diocese of Austin.
- Founded: 1872 (per business and church-history records).
- Early pastor (region): Rev. Joseph Mosiewicz, ordained Galveston 1875; ministering in Marlin from 1877.
