The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City, Missouri, is the Mother Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jefferson City. Established as a parish in 1959 and elevated to cathedral status in 1968, it was formally dedicated on May 5, 1974, by Cardinal John Joseph Carberry. History of the Cathedral
The Diocese of Jefferson City was erected in 1956 with St. Peter's Church as its original cathedral; Bishop Joseph M. Marling, CPPS, immediately began planning a new cathedral on a 25-acre site across from Memorial Park. Monsignor Joseph A. Vogelweid, the first vicar general, selected St. Joseph as patron and oversaw site selection. Architects Maguolo and Quick of St. Louis designed the modern circular cathedral; Robert Brunelli of Kansas City designed the stained glass and marble work; Prost Builders of Jefferson City was the contractor. Groundbreaking was held August 20, 1967; the first Mass was celebrated December 25, 1968; the cathedral was formally consecrated May 5, 1974, by Cardinal John Joseph Carberry, with Bishops Marling and McAuliffe assisting. Bishops Michael F. McAuliffe (1969), John R. Gaydos (1997), W. Shawn McKnight (2018), and Ralph B. O'Donnell (2025) have all been ordained/installed at the cathedral. After a 16-month, approximately $15 million renovation led by architect William Heyer, the cathedral was rededicated on May 5, 2023, gaining 12 new Willet Hauser stained-glass windows, a new crucifix rising from the central tension ring, new liturgical furnishings, an enlarged narthex, outdoor canopy, bell towers, bronze doors, and a custom pipe organ.

Architecture and Sacred Art
The cathedral is a landmark of mid-century-modern sacred architecture: a circular plan 157 feet in diameter with a 72-foot Douglas-fir ceiling supported by 16 laminated beams meeting at a central 9-foot steel tension ring that creates an oculus for a 29-foot spire. The exterior is Indiana limestone, the copper roof has 16 gables evoking a crown, and the 950-seat nave (1,200 with floor seating) has 19,000 square feet of terrazzo flooring. Following the 2023 renovation, new stained-glass windows by Associated Crafts & Willet Hauser of Winona, Minnesota, illustrate Acts 2:42; new wood paneling and a crucifix are crafted from locally grown white oak; and Stations of the Cross are painted on copper. Shrine areas honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, St. Isidore the Farmer and his wife Blessed Maria, and Venerable Father Augustus Tolton — a native of northeastern Missouri. The cathedral also features the original bronze main doors (500 lb each) designed by Marianist Brother Stephen Erspammer, with a central Christ medallion inscribed 'Ego sum lux mundi.'

2022–2023 Renovation and Rededication
Closed in January 2022 for a 16-month renovation designed to address failing systems, modernize accessibility, and deepen the cathedral's Catholic identity, the building was rededicated on May 5, 2023 — the 49th anniversary of its original consecration. Architect William Heyer preserved signature mid-century elements (circular geometry, Douglas fir beams, terrazzo floor, white travertine marble) while adding a new altar, tabernacle, ambo, bishop's chair, baptistery, an enlarged narthex facing West Main Street, an outdoor canopy and bell towers, bronze doors and reliefs, a custom pipe organ, 12 new triangular stained-glass windows, new shrines, and a crucifix rising from the structural tension ring above the altar. The renovation was funded entirely by donors, and Bishop McKnight established a Cathedral Preservation Fund for future upkeep.

Faith Formation, PSR, and Sacraments
The Cathedral's Faith Formation office, led by Julie Gramlich, coordinates Parish School of Religion (PSR) classes for public-school children, OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults), Baptism Preparation, Confirmation Preparation, Marriage Preparation, Lenten studies, Consecration Retreats, Bible-study groups, and the parish's free subscription to FORMED digital Catholic media. Faith formation is understood as a holistic path of head, heart, and hands — forming children, youth, and adults into intentional disciples.

Youth Ministry
The Cathedral's Youth Ministry, directed by Claire Galbraith, empowers young people to embrace Catholic values through XLT IGNITE evenings (third Thursday each month), XLT Adoration, retreats, conferences, Fellowship Nights, small groups, middle-school girls' Bible studies, and the Families-In-Need service program. The ministry actively recruits adult leaders to walk alongside middle-schoolers in faith and fellowship.

St. Joseph Cathedral School
St. Joseph Cathedral School (SJCS) opened in 1960 with grades 1–6, initially staffed by the Sisters of Mercy of Swinford, Ireland, recruited by Monsignor O'Duignan. The school added grades 7 and 8 in 1961 and took over the original church-school building when the cathedral opened in 1968. A 1977 activities building added a gym and stage; 1984 saw new classrooms, a music room, science lab, computer lab, and special-service classrooms; kindergarten, enrichment, and extended-care programs began in 1986; a preschool opened in 1995; and a major 2008 expansion added a library, cafeteria, kitchen, science and computer labs, offices, and 16 classrooms. The Sisters of Mercy withdrew from school administration in 1987 and from teaching by 1989. The school gym was rebuilt and enlarged in 2018–2019. As of 2026, SJCS principal Gina Bailey leads a community of approximately 500 students.

Visiting the Cathedral
Free tour booklets describing the architecture and artwork are available near the entrance of the Cathedral Proper. Visitors are welcome at any scheduled Mass; the parish office is open 8:00 AM–4:00 PM weekdays (closed on some holidays). The cathedral's 25-acre campus includes the Adoration Chapel, the Alphonse J. Schwartze Memorial Catholic Center (diocesan chancery), a Carmelite monastery, St. Joseph Cathedral School, and Resurrection Cemetery, all on West Main Street across from Memorial Park.
