Catholic History in Hominy
Catholic contact with the Osage people, on whose land Hominy sits, goes back to French Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century, but a permanent Catholic presence in the Hominy area began in the late 19th century. Marquette University's archival guide records that Benedictine missionaries from Immaculate Conception in Pawhuska attended a 'Hominy Creek station (Osage)' from 1888 to 1907, and that a separate 'Hominy station (Osage)' operated from about 1894 to 1900 before being transferred to St. Francis in Stillwater. The mission church itself — 'St. Joseph Mission (Osage), Hominy, Osage Nation' — appears in the archival record with sacramental registers covering 1931 to 1949.
