History of St. Joseph's in Hanna
The Catholic presence in Hanna grew alongside the Union Pacific Coal Company's mining camps. According to local Hanna history records, the original St. Joseph's Catholic Church was built across from the coal chute on the east end of town. In 1950 the church was relocated to the west side of Hanna, just off Highway 30 near No. 4 mine, and set on a new foundation with a basement that served as an apartment for visiting priests. A newer St. Joseph's Catholic Church was later built on the south edge of town and continues in use as the present mission church.
