Saint Joseph's Parish Downtown (also called St. Joseph Catholic Church – Downtown) is a historic Roman Catholic parish located at 623 East Commerce Street in downtown San Antonio, Texas, part of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Often called the "Jewel in the Heart of San Antonio," the parish is famous for being literally built around by Joske's department store in the 1940s, giving it the affectionate local nickname "St. Joske's." The parish has been served by the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (SSS) religious order since 1982, making Eucharistic adoration a centerpiece of its identity. Today, it is a multicultural community offering Mass in English and Spanish, daily Eucharistic adoration, and active ministries ranging from the Guadalupana Society to the historic San Antonio Liederkranz choir that still sings at Mass monthly.

Mission & Identity
The parish describes itself as a 'communio' — a multi-cultural parish whose center of life is the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, the 'Sacrament of Love.' As Disciples of Christ and 'the Eucharistic Community of St. Joseph,' parishioners worship God the Father, serve one another in charity, grow in faith, hope, and love, welcome visitors, and further the presence of God in the world.
Parish History
St. Joseph's parish was founded by San Antonio's German Catholic community in the 1860s. The cornerstone was laid in November 1868 (originally scheduled for May 8 but delayed by a tropical hurricane), and the Gothic Revival church was dedicated in 1871. It grew through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, adding a steeple (1898) and Munich-made Emil Frei stained glass (1902), before the famous 1944 refusal to sell to Joske's led to the church being enveloped by the department store that gave it the nickname 'St. Joske's.' A restoration began in 1981.

Architecture & Sacred Art
The Gothic Revival sanctuary was designed by Gustavus Freisleben with Theodore Giraud seeing it through to completion. Inside, Father Henry Pefferkorn painted Renaissance-style Annunciation and Assumption murals over the side altars along with Stations of the Cross in the 1870s, and acquired a pipe organ and four consecrated bells. Stained glass windows were imported from the Emil Frei Art Glass Factory in Munich in 1902.

The parish has been entrusted to the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (SSS) since 1982. The current pastor is Fr. Arul Tharcius Dhairiam, SSS, an Indian priest assigned in 2025; he succeeded Fr. Mark Del Rosario, SSS, a Filipino-American priest who was installed on July 29, 2023, in the first joint pastorate between the Province of Saint Ann (USA) and the Province of Our Lady of the Assumption (Philippines). Deacon Vincent Scheel assists the parish.

Music & Cultural Heritage
The parish's German Catholic heritage is preserved by the San Antonio Liederkranz, founded by Fr. Henry Pefferkorn, which still sings at Mass once a month. Spanish-language Mass is celebrated with mariachi music, making the parish a multicultural center where English, Spanish, and centuries-old German Catholic musical traditions meet beneath a Gothic Revival roof.
