Our History
The parish was founded in the summer of 1956 when Archbishop Albert G. Meyer appointed Father Paul F. Lipscomb as its first pastor. Father Lipscomb planted a Sacred Heart Badge — his symbolic 'mustard seed' of faith — near the corner of Calhoun and Gebhardt Roads. The first Sunday Mass was held at Brookfield High School, with weekday Masses in a basement chapel in the rectory. Within a month, parishioners pledged more than $100,000 to build an above-ground church and a school. The school opened in September 1957 with 192 students taught by the Notre Dame School Sisters, and a midnight Mass was celebrated in the new church on Christmas Eve 1957. The current church was built in 1978, replacing the original — which today serves as the school cafeteria.

Vatican II and Parish Life
By the mid-1960s, the Second Vatican Council reshaped how the parish celebrated liturgy. Archbishop Cousins spoke of 'the importance and the scope of the lay apostolate,' and on May 17, 1965, the altar at SJV was turned to face the congregation. Parishioners took up new liturgical roles as lectors and Eucharistic ministers, and the first parish council formally met on September 25, 1967.

Devotions and Other Prayer Services
In addition to Mass and adoration, the parish keeps a regular rhythm of Marian and devotional prayer: the Rosary on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel; the Rosary and Litany of Our Lady on the first Saturday of the month following the 8:00 AM Mass; Centering Prayer on Tuesdays at 1:00 PM in Room P201 of the Parish Center; and the Angelus or Regina Coeli at noon on weekdays at the entrance of the Parish Office.

Sacraments
SJV prepares parishioners for all seven sacraments. Baptisms are celebrated a few times each month on weekends with required parental instruction (encouraged prior to birth). First Communion and Confirmation are coordinated through the Christian Formation Office. Marriages require contacting the pastor at least six months in advance, with weddings commonly scheduled Saturdays at 10:00 AM, noon, and 2:00 PM. Anointing of the Sick is offered at the Thursday 7:00 AM Mass, by appointment, or in emergencies. Communion for the homebound is arranged through the Parish Office.

Christian Formation at SJV encompasses formation for adults, children, and youth, including sacramental preparation. The parish also runs an on-site school — Saint John Vianney Catholic School, originally opened in 1957 with the Notre Dame School Sisters — and offers small-group formation such as Foundations of Faith, an Ascension Press video series featuring Catholic presenters like Edward Sri, Jeff Cavins, and Fr. Mike Schmitz.

Deacons — Ministry and Backgrounds
Deacon Dean Collins was officially assigned to SJV by Archbishop Listecki on December 17, 2024 (having served at the parish since June 2023) and has been a deacon since June 9, 1984. He is a retired Milwaukee Police Inspector and former Brookfield Assistant Chief of Police, a chaplain for the U.S. Secret Service, Wisconsin State Patrol, Milwaukee County Sheriff, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and a Knight in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Deacon Jamie Zdroik, ordained in the months prior to publication of his bio, grew up on a family farm in central Wisconsin, holds degrees from UW-Madison and DePaul, and lives in Brookfield with his wife Erica and their daughters; he focuses on connecting the parish to its school, engaging the parish in service across Metro Milwaukee, and supporting engaged and married couples.
