Parish History and Identity

Founded in the late nineteenth century, St. John the Evangelist grew alongside San Francisco's Catholic community in the decades after the Gold Rush. After surviving the 1906 earthquake and fires, the parish rebuilt its facilities and continued to expand through the twentieth century, adding classrooms for its parochial school and halls for parish societies. Following the Second Vatican Council, the parish embraced liturgical renewal and increasingly became a multicultural worshiping community.
