Parish History

Catholic life in Pocasset predates the parish itself by decades. The pastor of Corpus Christi first offered Mass here in 1912 in a barn for summer vacationers. By 1924 land had been purchased and a building moved to the site, which was converted into St. John's Chapel. The present church was dedicated in 1931. The community was formally established as a parish for the Monument Beach, Pocasset, and Cataumet sections of Bourne in June 1969. The parish center was completed in 1980, and the church was refurbished and enlarged in 1983 to better serve its growing community. This history is drawn from 'Bearing Fruit by Streams of Waters: A History of the Diocese of Fall River' by Barry W. Wall.
