St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Rosholt, South Dakota, serves a rural parish community rooted in faith and tradition. Founded in 1911 as St. Nicholas Church, it was relocated and renamed in 1927, then rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1936. Parish History
The story of Catholicism in the Rosholt area began with a small group of families who settled near Vernon in 1892. They initially attended church in Hankinson, ND, 18 miles away. In 1911, St. Nicholas Church was blessed on land donated by Nicholas Pohl. The church was moved to town in 1927 and later destroyed by fire in 1936. A basement church was built, and the parish was renamed St. John the Baptist in 1936 due to a donation from sisters of Rev. John Mahoney. A new church and rectory were built in the 1950s at the southwest edge of town.
Religious Education
Elementary classes are held from 3pm-4:30pm. Evening classes include supper at 6:30 and class from 7pm to 8:15pm. Catechists are assigned by grade level.
