Parish Identity and Patron
St. John Neumann Catholic Church takes its name from St. John Neumann (1811–1860), the Bohemian-born Redemptorist who became the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia and was the first American bishop to be canonized. His liturgical memorial is celebrated on January 5. The parish carries on his legacy of missionary zeal and bilingual ministry on the Texas–Mexico border.

Parish History
St. John Neumann was erected in 1979 under Bishop Thomas J. Drury, the Fourth Bishop of Corpus Christi, during a period of significant growth in the Western Vicariate of the Diocese of Corpus Christi. Its founding — alongside San Martin de Porres (1979), St. Vincent de Paul (1969), and St. Patrick (1970) — brought the total number of parishes in the city of Laredo to thirteen. When Pope John Paul II erected the Diocese of Laredo on July 3, 2000, St. John Neumann became one of its founding parishes.

Diocese of Laredo
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Laredo was created on July 3, 2000 by Pope John Paul II and formally installed on August 9, 2000 at the Laredo Civic Center, when Auxiliary Bishop James A. Tamayo of Galveston-Houston became the diocese's first bishop. The diocese encompasses seven South-Texas counties — Dimmit, Jim Hogg, La Salle, Maverick, Webb, Zapata, and Zavala — and as of 2018 reported one bishop, 48 diocesan priests, 14 religious priests, 33 permanent deacons, 32 parishes, and 17 missions. St. John Neumann is one of the 32 parishes listed in the diocese's official parish directory.
