Saint John Mission (officially Saint John the Evangelist Mission) is a Catholic mission church in the heart of historic downtown Mukilteo, Washington, and is the oldest church still standing in the town's center. Founded in 1919 and dedicated in April 1920, it has served the Catholics of Mukilteo for over a century as a worship site, a neighborhood landmark, and a place of Eucharistic devotion. Since 1957 it has been served as a mission of Saint Mary Magdalen Parish in Everett, and in 2024 the two were formally joined as Parish Family 7 under the Archdiocese of Seattle's Partners in the Gospel renewal, sharing one pastor — Father Hans M. Olson — and a common staff.

Because it shares a pastor, staff, faith formation, and sacramental programs with Saint Mary Magdalen Parish in Everett, parishioners also have access to a much larger community of ministries, a perpetual adoration chapel, and Mass in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese — all without losing the warmth of the little Mukilteo mission.

- Confession is regularly available at the partner parish, St. Mary Magdalen in Everett (Saturdays at 3:30 pm, Bilingual; and Thursdays before First Friday at 6:30 pm). No regularly scheduled weekly confession is published for Saint John Mission itself; seasonal (Advent/Lent) opportunities are announced in the bulletin.

History of the Mission
Before Saint John was built, Mukilteo-area Catholics worshipped in a building on Second Street, served by a priest who was chaplain at Everett's Providence Hospital. The mission was established in 1919 and dedicated in April 1920. In 1921 it was formally designated a mission, and over the decades it was attached successively to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, then Immaculate Conception, and finally Saint Mary Magdalen Parish when Archbishop Thomas Conolly created the latter in November 1957. The little church has remained a mission ever since, even as the surrounding Catholic community has grown around it.

The Centennial Celebration (2021)
The faith community originally began marking its 100th year in January 2020 with a parish breakfast, but other planned events were canceled because of the COVID-19 lockdown. On August 29, 2021, Archbishop Paul D. Etienne finally celebrated the centennial with a 9:00 a.m. Mass at the mission, followed by brunch. Father Hans Olson designed the centennial banners displayed in the church, which feature the Greek letters IC XC N — a traditional Christogram meaning 'Jesus Christ Conquers.'

Parish Family 7 & Partners in the Gospel
In 2024, the Archdiocese of Seattle reorganized its 136 parishes into 60 parish families as part of Partners in the Gospel, a strategic pastoral planning effort to renew parish life. Saint John Mission was placed in Parish Family 7 alongside Saint Mary Magdalen Parish in Everett, under the leadership of one pastor — Father Hans M. Olson. The two worship sites share clergy and staff and are working together on a One Parish Plan covering structure, ministries, liturgical life, outreach, and use of the two campuses.

Mass & Liturgy
Saint John Mission celebrates a single Sunday Mass at 9:00 a.m. in English. Daily Masses, weekday Masses, and additional weekend Masses (including the Saturday vigil, a Spanish Mass, and a Vietnamese Mass) are offered at the partner parish, Saint Mary Magdalen, in Everett. The mission also hosts special devotions throughout the year, including Divine Mercy Sunday with the Chaplet of Mercy before the Blessed Sacrament exposed.

Sacraments
Because Saint John is a mission of Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, sacramental preparation, scheduling, and record-keeping are handled through the shared parish office in Everett. The Eucharist is celebrated weekly at the mission, with daily Masses available at St. Mary Magdalen. First Communion, Confirmation, Baptism, Marriage, and Anointing of the Sick are coordinated through the parish office, with support from Adult Faith Formation (Maxim Farrell) and Youth Ministry (Emily Curran).

Ministries at Saint John Mission
Saint John Mission runs an active slate of lay-led ministries despite its small size. Volunteers serve as altar servers, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, ushers, sacristans, choir members, and church decorators. A Men's Club and a Women's Guild support parish life and fellowship, while a Communion-to-the-Homebound ministry brings the Eucharist to those who cannot attend Mass. A Memento Mori Ministry is led by parish nurses, and a Maintenance Committee cares for the historic building.
