St. John Mary Vianney Catholic Church is a parish in Kirkland's Finn Hill neighborhood on the Eastside of Seattle, named for the patron saint of priests. Founded in 1971 at the former St. Thomas Seminary in Kenmore, it is today a parish family with neighboring Holy Family (Kirkland) under the Archdiocese of Seattle's Partners in the Gospel initiative. With about 600 households, it is known for its commitment to social justice, a robust St. Vincent de Paul outreach chapter, a Catholic preschool, faith formation for all ages, and weekday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

Worship is supported by a robust schedule of weekday Masses, weekend Masses with a nursery, daily Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, livestreamed Masses, a Catholic preschool, faith formation for kids and youth, Confirmation and OCIA programs, a Young Adults community, and mission treks to Mexico. As of July 1, 2024 it shares pastoral leadership with neighboring Holy Family Kirkland under Partners in the Gospel, forming one parish family.

Our Story
St. John Mary Vianney Parish began in 1971 as an on-site parish for seminarian training at the now-closed St. Thomas Seminary in Kenmore. Founded by Sulpician Father Edward J. Hogan, the first 450 families were drawn from St. Mark (Seattle), St. Brendan (Bothell), and Holy Family (Kirkland). When the seminaries closed in 1976, the parish stayed on the former seminary site and then relocated to its present Finn Hill location, dedicated by Archbishop Thomas Murphy in 1993.

Mission

The community gathers to make Jesus visible through stewardship in worship, service, education, and involvement.
Parish Family 24 — Partners in the Gospel
On July 1, 2024, the Archdiocese of Seattle's Partners in the Gospel strategic pastoral planning process consolidated 136 parishes into 60 parish families (with eight stand-alone parishes). St. John Vianney became Parish Family 24 with Holy Family, Kirkland (98033), temporarily known as 'Parishes of Kirkland.' Father Brad Hagelin was installed as Pastor and Father Val Park as Parochial Vicar for the new parish family, which over three years will form one canonical parish.

Worship and Mass
Weekend Masses are celebrated Saturday at 5:00 pm and Sunday at 9:00 am (livestreamed) and 11:00 am; a nursery is available during Sunday Masses. Weekday Masses are celebrated Wednesday through Friday at 9:00 am, with a Word and Communion Service Monday and Tuesday at 9:00 am. Holy Day Masses are at 9:00 am and 7:00 pm.

Sacraments
The parish celebrates all seven Catholic sacraments. Two years of preparation are now required for First Sacraments: a 'proximate preparation' year followed by an 'immediate preparation' year, in line with Archdiocesan requirements. Children over age 7 who are unbaptized enter the Church through the Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for children and are received at the Easter Vigil.

Faith Formation and Religious Education
Faith formation at SJV spans infants through young adults. The Catholic Kids' Catechism Club (CKCC) gathers 3-year-olds through 5th graders during the 9:00 am Sunday Mass, using the Seeds/Pflaum Gospel Weeklies curriculum, while older elementary students learn grade-level faith content through year-long challenges. Children's Liturgy of the Word is offered during the 11:00 am Sunday Mass.

Youth and Young Adults
Middle and high school youth meet Sunday nights from 6:15 to 7:45 pm for Youth Group with age-appropriate small groups, and the parish offers an annual summer trip — most recently a high-school spiritual experience trip to Alaska. Young Adults (ages 18–39) have their own parish family community.

St. John Mary Vianney Catholic Preschool
The parish preschool serves children ages 3–5 of all faith backgrounds as an extension of the Faith Formation Program, with a faith-filled, developmentally appropriate curriculum covering academic, social, spiritual, and physical growth. Programs include art, science, music, pre-reading and pre-math skills, motor skills, yoga, and mindfulness.

Outreach and Social Justice
Outreach is central to the parish's identity. Its St. Vincent de Paul chapter (the SJV-Kirkland Conference) helps neighbors with rent, utilities, motel stays, food, and Christmas assistance, and the parish also hosts the PREPARES pregnancy/parenting ministry and a Social Justice committee that applies Catholic Social Teaching to local and global concerns.
