Parish History & Heritage
Catholic life in the mountains of southwestern Fayette County reaches back to 1877, when priests from Uniontown said Mass in the homes of families scattered across Elliottsville, Markleysburg, and Ohiopyle. In 1902 that ministry was formalized with the dedication of the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Elliottsville. Sixty years later, with the post-war growth of Catholic families and the rise of tourism around Fort Necessity, a new plot of land was acquired and an existing building was christened St. Joan of Arc Church in 1962. The current church replaced it in 1981.

St. Joan of Arc is pastored by Rev. James F. Petrovsky, a priest of the Diocese of Greensburg ordained in 1968 who has served multiple parishes across western Pennsylvania and currently also serves as chaplain at SCI-Fayette in LaBelle. The Most Rev. Larry J. Kulick, JCL, is the diocesan bishop. Parishioner Christina Homer coordinates the Food Pantry and the Lunch 4 Kids school-supplies drive, and 'Nancy' at the Uniontown parish office handles clearances and training for parish volunteers.

Sacraments
St. Joan of Arc prepares parishioners for the sacraments of Baptism, Marriage, Anointing of the Sick, and Reconciliation, and coordinates Eucharist and Anointing for the homebound. Couples are asked to contact the parish office at least six months in advance of a wedding. Counseling referrals are available through the Diocese of Greensburg Catholic Charities office.

Outreach & Charity
St. Joan of Arc runs several outreach efforts rooted in its mountain setting. The on-site Food Pantry serves anyone in need — parishioner or not — and prefers 'pop-top' or easy-pull lids on donated canned goods. Lunch 4 Kids collects personal items and non-perishable food for local schools, and the seasonal Mitten Tree gathers hats, scarves, and gloves for distribution. Two to three Fish Fry dinners are held each fall, accompanied by a Basket Raffle, as parish fundraisers.

Parish Life & Devotions
Beyond the Mass schedule, the parish gathers for the Rosary before weekday Masses and for special patriotic devotions such as the Independence Day Patriotic Rosary. Liturgical roles are filled by a roster of Altar Servers, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, and cantors that rotate by Mass. All parish volunteers working with children must complete PA Mandated Reporter Training, PA Criminal History and Child Abuse clearances, the diocesan Code of Conduct, and Virtus training.

Roman Catholic Churches of Southern Fayette
St. Joan of Arc is one of seven parishes that form the Roman Catholic Churches of Southern Fayette, a collaborative grouping administered from the Uniontown parish office at 724-437-4441. The other parishes in the collaboration are St. John the Evangelist, St. Joseph, St. Mary Nativity, St. Therese, St. Hubert, and Ss. Cyril and Methodius. Together the seven parishes share sacramental scheduling, office staff, and certain ministries such as clearances for volunteers, while each parish retains its own identity, pastor, and worship life.
