St. James Catholic Church is a historic Catholic parish in Seguin, Texas, in the Seguin Rural Deanery of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. With roots stretching back to 1873, when its first church was blessed and dedicated — one year before the establishment of the Diocese of San Antonio — it is one of the oldest Catholic communities in the archdiocese. Alongside its companion parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. James serves the Catholic population of Guadalupe County, drawing more than 905 registered families. The parish operates St. James Catholic School (PreK–8), whose 1850 schoolhouse is recognized as the oldest building in Texas continuously used as a school, and offers a full sacramental and pastoral life including Perpetual Adoration, RCIA, faith formation for all ages, a Criminal Justice Ministry, and a parish Food Pantry.

Parish Identity & History
St. James Catholic Church is one of the oldest parishes in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The first church building was blessed and dedicated on March 30, 1873 — a year before the Diocese of San Antonio itself was established. Today St. James and Our Lady of Guadalupe together serve the Catholic population of Seguin and Guadalupe County, with over 905 registered families calling St. James home. The parish was named an official Jubilee 2025 Pilgrimage Site by the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

The Church Building
The current church was built in 1914 in Gothic Revival style, sheathed in red brick, and designed by the noted Texas architect Leo M. J. Dielmann (1881–1969). A one-and-a-half story building, it features five pairs of tall arched windows down the nave, narrow arched windows flanking a central covered entryway, twin carved wooden doors at the entrance, and corner towers topped by crosses. Inside, beautiful stained-glass windows complete a worship space that the Archdiocese describes as creating 'a beautiful atmosphere for worship and reflection.'

St. James Catholic School
Even older than the church is St. James Catholic School, which dates to 1850. Its original two-story limecrete building, constructed using Dr. John E. Park's pioneering concrete and formerly known as Guadalupe High School, was recognized by a Texas historical marker in 1962 as the oldest continuously used school building in the state. Today the parish school serves approximately 200 students in PreK through 8th grade and has been recognized as an 'exemplary' campus in its accreditation reviews. The school's vision since 1850 has been to nourish the spiritual, intellectual, social, cultural, and physical needs of students within a strong, Catholic, family-oriented environment.

Mass & Sacraments
St. James offers Mass seven days a week. The parish celebrates a Vigil Mass on Saturday at 4:00 PM and three Sunday Masses (8:00 AM, 10:15 AM, 12:15 PM). Weekday Masses are offered Tuesday (8:00 AM), Wednesday (5:30 PM), Thursday (8:00 AM / 8:05 AM on school days), and Friday (8:00 AM). The Sacrament of Reconciliation is heard Saturdays from 3:15 PM to 3:55 PM and on weekdays by appointment. RCIA prepares adults seeking Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, or reception into the Catholic Church.

Family Faith Formation gathers parents and children together for breakfast, adult lessons, prayer, and parent-led age-appropriate groups.

Youth Ministry — Life Teen & Edge
St. James offers two parish-based youth programs. Edge is the parish's middle-school ministry, and Life Teen serves high-school students in grades 9–12. Both groups are designed as welcoming faith communities where teens can be challenged to live the Gospel and grow into faithful young adults.

Worship, Music & Liturgy
Beyond the celebration of the Eucharist, St. James supports a variety of Worship & Liturgy ministries to help parishioners develop their spiritual lives outside of Mass. XLT — a Praise & Worship evening with Adoration — meets on Tuesdays. The Cenacle of Prayer gathers parishioners to pray the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet for the Holy Father, priests, the faithful, and all souls, using meditations drawn from 'To the Priests: Our Lady's Beloved Sons.'

Spiritual Direction & Pastoral Care
St. James offers one-on-one Spiritual Direction to help individuals discern how the Holy Spirit is personally leading them, and the Bereavement Committee provides reception and support to families after the loss of a loved one. The parish also assists families with arrangements for funerals, Masses, and other pastoral needs.

Outreach & Charity
St. James carries out the call to serve beyond its walls through several outreach ministries. The Food Pantry is a collective parish effort to feed the hungry in the wider community, and donations can be dropped off at the church. The Criminal Justice Ministry ministers to the incarcerated, mentors parolees, and aids those struggling with drug addiction, with Catholic teaching offered through Bible study, Catechism, and correspondence programs.
