Parish History
St. James the Just was founded in August 1966 as a Catholic parish of the Diocese of Salt Lake City serving Ogden and northern Weber County. The original church building was dedicated in 1968. Over four decades the parish community grew and, in June 2006, the present church was solemnly dedicated — an occasion marked by the commission of a special icon of St. James the Just for the new church. The parish is named for St. James the Lesser (the Just), the brother of the Lord and traditionally the first bishop of Jerusalem.

Faith Formation & Religious Education
The parish's mission in religious education is 'to collaborate with parents to form a new generation of Catholics who know and love Jesus Christ and live as his disciples in the community of the Catholic Church.' The program offers unified, engaging formation for children and youth, with parents strongly encouraged to walk closely with their children as they grow in knowledge and practice of the Catholic faith. OCIA — Becoming Catholic
For adults seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church, St. James offers the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), facilitated by parishioner John Valdez. Adults in OCIA receive all three Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist — at the Easter Vigil each year. Children of catechetical age (over 7) and unbaptized adults follow an adapted two-year process culminating at the Easter Vigil.

Sacraments
The seven sacraments — Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony — 'touch all the stages and all important moments of the Christian life' (CCC 1210), as the parish website notes. Baptism is normally administered to infants; children over 7 and adults follow formal instruction (Religious Education or OCIA). A first Confession precedes First Holy Communion for those in formation. Parish Ministries & Organizations
St. James the Just runs a robust network of lay-led ministries and parish organizations, with named coordinators for nearly every role. The Parish Pastoral Council, led by President Luke Lacey, provides governance and vision. The Knights of Columbus (Grand Knight George Muggee) and the Council of Catholic Women (President Maria Devereux) anchor men's and women's service and fellowship. Parish Life & Fellowship
Beyond the sanctuary, St. James hosts regular fellowship events that build community across generations. The parish's signature gatherings are the monthly Coffee & Donuts in the Social Hall after the 2nd Sunday Masses, and the popular Breakfast Burritos served the 3rd Sunday of each month after the 9 AM Mass (paused during the summer months of June through August). A nine-day Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is offered for specific intentions.

Getting Involved & Parish Registration
St. James warmly invites new members to register and join the parish family. Registration forms are available in the office, in the church foyer, or as a downloadable PDF on the parish website, and can be returned to the office Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, placed in the collection basket at any Mass, or emailed to [email protected]. Families with children in Religious Education or seeking Baptism are asked to register with the parish.
