Why belong here

St. James offers daily and weekly Mass with a clear, posted schedule (including a Saturday Vigil, a Sunday morning English Mass, and a monthly Spanish Mass on the second Sunday), regular Saturday confessions, weekly Eucharolic Adoration on Thursdays, and sacramental preparation for families. Visitors and parishioners are welcomed into a small, close-knit rural Catholic community that also reaches out across Converse County to the mission communities of Glendo and Glenrock. A youth program and the basic liturgical and parish-life ministries round out what Father Lucas and the small staff describe as a parish eager 'to greet you and share with you our love for Jesus Christ and for you, our neighbor.'

Parish Identity & Welcome

St. James Catholic Church is the Catholic parish of Douglas, Wyoming, serving Converse County and welcoming the Catholic faithful, local residents, and visitors. The parish describes itself as a community that wants 'to greet you and share with you our love for Jesus Christ and for you, our neighbor.' The parish belongs to the Diocese of Cheyenne and is listed in the diocesan parish finder under the pastoral care of Father Lucas K. Simango.

History of the Parish

St. James was formally established on December 15, 1910, when Bishop James A. Keane approved the parish together with a network of missions across four eastern Wyoming counties. From 1910 to 1960 the parish and its missions were staffed by the Conventual Franciscans, with St. James friary in Douglas serving as the hub for 13 mission churches in an area of more than 11,000 square miles — one of the largest territorial parishes in the United States. The Conventual Franciscans formally withdrew on September 15, 1960, and the parish passed to diocesan clergy. It continues today as a community of faith serving the people of Converse County.
