History of the Parish
St. Ignatius traces its origins to mission visits by Father Charles Nerinckx, one of Kentucky's first Catholic missionaries, who traveled to a stagecoach stop called Harcourt to celebrate Mass and provide religious instruction in settlers' log cabins. By 1830, the relocation of Bethlehem Academy brought Hardin County its first resident pastor, Father Charles Cissell, who served the Harcourt settlement and other area missions. In 1839, Father Augustine Degauquier designed and built the first St. Ignatius Church, a modest 38-by-24-foot brick structure completed in 1842 at a cost of $1,000, adjacent to a long-established Catholic cemetery.
