History of the Parish
Founded in 1902, St. Ignatius of Antioch grew rapidly into one of the signature Catholic congregations on Cleveland's West Side. The parish school opened in 1904 and the current church was built between 1925 and 1930. The upper church was dedicated on November 9, 1930, with Bishop Joseph Schrembs presiding; the parish marked the 90th anniversary of that dedication on November 8, 2020 with Bishop Edward Malesic concelebrating.

The Lower Church & Proposed Renovations
The lower church has been central to parish life since the very beginning: in the earliest years, Mass was celebrated there while the upper church was still under construction. By the 1950s, attendance had grown so much that simultaneous Masses were held in both the upper and lower church on Sundays. In the 1980s, a portion of the basement was set aside to store food pantry supplies, and over time the space became a catch-all for Christmas decorations, festival supplies, and assorted parish belongings. Crews have been working to clear, organize, and reclaim the basement as usable space, and a final rendering of proposed renovations for the lower church has been shared with parishioners.

Architecture & Bell Tower
The most distinctive feature of the parish is its 210-foot bell tower, which makes St. Ignatius of Antioch the second-tallest church in Cleveland. The upper church and the attached school complex were constructed between 1925 and 1930, with the upper church formally dedicated on November 9, 1930.

Taizé Prayer
St. Ignatius of Antioch hosts Taizé Prayer, a meditative style of prayer developed by an ecumenical community of monks in rural France. Combining elements of the Liturgy of the Hours with contemplative meditation, the service weaves periods of silence, Scripture readings, prayers of praise and intercession, and simple repeated chants. The 2023 series was held on Thursdays and was live-streamed on Facebook so remote guests could join in prayer.

Rosary & Other Devotions
The Rosary is prayed communally every Friday morning at 8:30 AM, immediately before the 9:00 AM Mass. This brief devotion gives parishioners a quiet way to begin the day in Marian prayer together.

St. Ignatius of Antioch Elementary School
St. Ignatius of Antioch School opened in 1904, just two years after the parish itself was established. The first school building went up in 1917; the current building was constructed in the 1950s. Today the school serves more than 300 students of both religious and non-religious backgrounds and welcomes all families. The school is supported by the Angel Scholarship Fund, which turns tax dollars into tuition assistance, and offers a Digital Academy option for remote learning. School office: 216-671-0535.

Outdoor Classroom
In September 2024, Auxiliary Bishop Michael Woost dedicated and blessed a new outdoor classroom behind the school, the culmination of about 2½ weeks of construction and a year of planning and fundraising. The space — born out of the parish's desire, after COVID isolation, to help students reconnect with God's creation — features raised garden beds for vegetables and flowers, a pollinator garden, an outdoor screen, a sensory wall, a Buddy Bench, several brightly colored tables, artificial turf, and a gravel walkway, all enclosed by a tall wooden fence.

Food Pantry Ministry
The parish food pantry is held indoors on the second Tuesday of each month at 3:30 PM, with neighbors entering through the Lorain Avenue doors of the school. Distribution is limited to residents of zip codes 44111 and 44102. A small mini food pantry is also offered on occasion in connection with the Share-A-Meal community dinner.

Share-A-Meal Community Dinner
Share-A-Meal is the parish's twice-monthly community dinner, open to all — friends, families, neighbors, with no residency requirement. It is held in the school cafeteria, with doors opening at 4:30 PM for coffee and appetizers and dinner served at 5:30 PM. Enter through the rear door of the school.

Family Pray Date

Music & Liturgy
Liturgical music at St. Ignatius of Antioch is directed by Jason Lewis, the parish's Music Director and Organist. The parish's Taizé Prayer services also incorporate simple repeated chants as part of their meditative character.

The parish hosts a Narcotics Anonymous support group that meets on Sundays at 2:30 PM in the school cafeteria. It is one of several recovery and outreach ministries that meet on the parish grounds.
