History of St. Ignatius Parish
Catholic life in the Mount Horeb area began in 1846, when German immigrant families settled in Perry Township. As the Catholic population in the village of Mount Horeb itself grew, parishioners built a small frame church on South Sixth Street, which was completed in 1894 and named St. Ignatius. A rectory was added next door to house the parish priests. By the mid-twentieth century the original frame church was no longer large enough. The old structure was taken down in 1951, and a new brick church — built by local contractor Joseph Buechner — was dedicated on December 14, 1952, on the same lot. In recent years St. Ignatius was merged with neighboring Holy Redeemer Church in Perry to form St. Michael the Archangel Parish, while continuing to host its own schedule of Masses, confessions, and adoration.
