Saint Gertrude: A German-Heritage Parish in Grantfork

St. Gertrude Church in Grantfork, Illinois, is one of the small Catholic parishes that grew out of the German Catholic immigration into Madison County in the mid-19th century. It is now served together with Immaculate Conception in Pierron and St. Nicholas under one pastor and one parish staff. The parish still numbers about 230 parishioners across 96 families, who gather for Mass on Sundays and Tuesdays in the same village where their ancestors built the first brick church in 1872.

Saint Gertrude Church History

The parish's history, as published on the parish website, traces through a 1870 founding meeting, a long mission period served from St. Elizabeth's Marine, and the arrival of the first resident pastor in 1880. • September 1, 1870 — founding meeting of about 30 Catholic men at Saline (later Grantfork), directed by Rev. Peter Peters of St. Paul's Highland; nearly $3,000 raised.
• 1872 — small brick church constructed (unfinished for several years); for the first eight years the mission was attended once a month from St. Elizabeth's, Marine.
• 1878 — two-story rectory built; in the absence of a resident pastor it was used for school purposes.
• January 1, 1880 — Rev. Michael Weiss becomes the first resident pastor.
• September 15, 1881 — Bishop Peter Baltes dedicates the completed church; bell consecrated and 39 people confirmed; parish had 75 predominantly German families.
• 1903 — Rev. Duval decides to demolish the failing old church and build on the same site; last service in old church October 4, 1903.
• Spring 1905 — new church completed; dedication by Bishop James Ryan on June 12, 1905.
• February 7, 1943 — Rev. J. Aloysius Farrell, S.P., the first priest from the parish, celebrates his solemn Mass at St. Gertrude's.
• May 25, 1965 — Fr. Patrick Gerald Jackal ordained as the parish's second priest (Diocese of Springfield).
• December 3, 1946 — parish celebrates Rev. John B. Wardein's golden ordination jubilee and the parish's 75th anniversary; interior redecorated, stained-glass windows installed, new linoleum floor laid in the sanctuary.
• September 15, 1972 — centennial of the parish celebrated.

Devotions & Prayer Life

Beyond Sunday Mass, the combined parish community offers a traditional round of Eucharistic devotion, communal prayer, and seasonal practices. The centerpiece is weekly Eucharistic Adoration on Thursdays from September through April, when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in the monstrance for volunteer adorers.
