The parish was formed in 2013 by the merger of two heritage communities: St. Joseph Parish in Ida (founded 1869) and St. Irene Parish in Dundee (founded 1964). Today the parish continues to operate both worship sites. The Dundee church, commonly called St. Gabriel Parish 'Dundee Church,' is the focus of this profile.

  • Feast Day: September 29
  • Archdiocese: Detroit
  • Family of Parishes: Three Rivers (Monroe Vicariate)

History of the Dundee Worship Site

Catholic settlers arrived in the Dundee area from the 1820s onward, but a parish was not formally established in the village until 1964, when St. Irene Parish was created. By 2013, when St. Irene merged with St. Joseph of Ida to form St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, St. Irene had about 300 registered families. Both churches remain open for worship, although administrative offices for the unified parish are located at St. Joseph in Ida.

Companion Worship Site — St. Joseph Church, Ida

The Ida worship site preserves the older history of the merged parish. St. Joseph Parish was founded in 1869, just after the village of Ida was platted in 1868. The current brick church was built in 1904 in a simple style with notable art-nouveau flourishes, including a carved depiction of the Last Supper above the high altar, carvings of the Holy Family nearby, and statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Thérèse of Lisieux flanking the choir loft. The parish cemetery contains gravesites going back to the 1870s.
