History
St. Gabriel Roman Catholic Parish was founded in 1915 by Franciscan priest Father Peter Esper, becoming the 50th parish in the Archdiocese of Detroit. It was established to serve the German Catholic community on Detroit's west side; its first building, a cement-block "garage church," was replaced by a larger church in 1919, which was later removed in 1926. The present church, begun in 1953, is noted for its distinctive statues, softly tinted stained glass, and a large mosaic of the Crucifixion containing more than one million pieces. Today the parish serves a multicultural, largely Hispanic community in southwest Detroit as part of the SOLT Family of Parishes.
