Our History
The earliest history dates to 1605, when Franciscan Friars under Spain established missions in Suwannee County. These were destroyed by England around 1800. In 1907, a Presbyterian congregation moved into a new church and sold their building to the diocese, which became St. Margaret Mary’s on Pine Avenue. The name was later changed to St. Francis Xavier. By 1961, the old church was deteriorating, and Mass was discontinued for months; the congregation attended Mass in Madison or Lake City until the new church was completed in 1962 on U.S. 90. The old building was razed and the property sold.
