St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church is a bilingual Roman Catholic parish in Kearns, Utah, belonging to the Diocese of Salt Lake City. History of the Parish

St. Francis Xavier was established in 1955 to minister to the growing Catholic population in the Kearns area of Salt Lake County. Its founding pastor, Msgr. Mark O. Benvegnu, shepherded the parish from 1955 until 1962, a period in which he also served as Catholic chaplain at the Utah State Penitentiary. The church was rededicated on April 27, 1986, reflecting the physical and communal growth of the parish over its first three decades. A parish school was added alongside the church and continues today as St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, serving students from preschool through 8th grade.

St. Francis Xavier offers an unusually rich Mass schedule, with five weekend Masses in two languages and daily Masses Monday through Friday. English-speaking Catholics have a Saturday evening Mass and a Sunday morning Mass; the Spanish-speaking community gathers for Mass on Saturday evening and three times on Sunday morning and afternoon, with additional Spanish weekday evening Masses.

Faith Formation & Religious Education

Faith formation is at the heart of parish life at St. Francis Xavier. The parish offers CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) catechism classes for children preparing for First Communion and Confirmation, with a two-year cycle (e.g., 2024–2026). The Religious Education Office is open Friday 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM when catechism is in session. RCIA — Becoming Catholic

The parish runs the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), the ancient, restored-by-Vatican-II process for initiating new members into the Catholic Church. The RCIA journey moves through the Period of Inquiry (Pre-Catechumenate), the Rite of Initiation, the Catechumenate, the Rite of Election (with the bishop), reception of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation), and finally Mystagogy — a post-Easter time of reflection and deepening faith.
