History of St. Mary’s
The Diocese of Rochester was established in 1868, and St. Mary’s was organized on August 15, 1868. The first pastor, Rev. Thomas A. Maher, rented a house for Mass and later built a temporary wooden church called the 'Shanty Church.' In 1870, under Dr. Miles J. Loughlin, a stone church was constructed, and he also founded the Gray School in 1881. After his death in 1874, Rev. William Mulheron took over and worked for 31 years to improve the parish’s infrastructure and finances, including planning a new church for the Italian community, St. Francis of Assisi.
