Parish History
From walnut orchard to thriving parish: St. Francis of Assisi was established in 1955 to serve the Ygnacio Valley, with early Masses in a funeral parlor and cultural center before the present church property was ready.
- 1955: Parish founded by Fr. Edward T. Varni on walnut orchard land
- July 1955: First Mass at MacFarlane Funeral Parlor
- 1955-1956: Worship at Japanese Cultural Center on Treat Lane
- October 7, 1956: Church dedicated by Bishop Guilfoyle
- Original furnishings donated from San Francisco churches and the St. Francis Hotel
