Our Patron Saint — St. Francis de Sales

St. Francis de Sales (1567–1622) was born in France, studied law, then entered the priesthood and was appointed Provost of the Diocese of Geneva before becoming Bishop of Geneva in 1602 after a personal meeting with Pope Clement VIII. In an era when holiness was thought to require withdrawal from the world, Francis taught that holiness can be achieved in everyday life — for mothers, carpenters, bankers, physicians, and people in every walk of life — summed up in his famous counsel: 'Be who you are and be that well.' He was a prolific writer (Introduction to the Devout Life, Treatise on the Love of God) and was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1877. Because of his kind temperament he is often called the 'Gentleman Saint.' His feast day is January 24.
