About St. Eugene Parish

St. Eugene Church is the Catholic parish of McGregor, Texas, part of the Diocese of Austin. The parish exists to serve the faithful of McGregor and the surrounding rural area with regular Mass, the sacraments, religious education, and Adoration. Its central location on North Johnson Drive makes it the heart of Catholic life in this small central Texas community.

Parish History

St. Eugene was organized by the Diocese of Austin as a rural mission under the care of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Waco, as the new diocese (established in 1947) extended pastoral care into outlying towns. St. Mary, the oldest Catholic church in the region, shepherded this mission along with St. Joseph in Elk. St. Eugene eventually grew into a full parish and today provides its own full schedule of Masses, confession, and Adoration.

  • Originally organized as a rural mission of St. Mary of the Assumption, Waco
  • Sister-mission of St. Joseph in Elk
  • Now an independent parish within the Diocese of Austin

Faith Formation — CCE Program

The parish's CCE (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) Program provides religious education to the children of the parish, forming them in the Catholic faith alongside Sunday Mass attendance. CCE is a traditional Catholic religious-education model used widely in parishes without a parish school.

  • CCE Programs for children (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine / parish religious education)

Clergy

St. Eugene is served by a priest assigned by the bishop of the Diocese of Austin. The pastor also serves the nearby Our Lady of San Juan Mission in Moody, Texas.

  • Rev. Jose Luís Comparan — Pastor of St. Eugene Parish, McGregor, and Our Lady of San Juan Mission, Moody (appointed by Bishop Daniel E. Garcia, effective July 6, 2026)

Parish Identity — Patron Saint

The parish takes its name from St. Eugene — more properly Eugenius of Carthage — a 5th-century bishop of Carthage (in modern Tunisia) whom the Catholic Church venerates as a saint. Elected bishop in 480 AD, Eugenius defended orthodox Christology against Arianism during the Vandal persecution of Catholics in North Africa. He was twice exiled — once to the desert of Tripoli and later to Vienne in Gaul — and died in exile on July 13, 505. His feast day in the Roman calendar is July 13.

  • Saint Eugenius of Carthage, Bishop and Confessor
