About St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish (St. James) · Warren, Ohio

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish was a Roman Catholic parish in the Diocese of Youngstown that worshipped at St. James Church on Burton Street SE in Warren, Ohio. The parish was formed on July 1, 2012 through the merger of St. James Church (founded to serve Warren's East End) and SS. Cyril and Methodius Church (founded in 1928 for the area's Slovak Catholic community). Following the 2022 formal closure of the SS. Cyril and Methodius building by Bishop David J. Bonnar, St. James became the parish's sole worship site. On July 1, 2024, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton joined with Blessed Sacrament Parish and St. Mary & St. Joseph Parish to form the new St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, the unified Catholic parish of the city of Warren. Throughout its life the parish was known for its weekly Friday Pirohy (pierogi) sales, its devotion to St. Jude, and its ministry to the East End families of Warren.

Why belong here

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish was a tight-knit East End Warren parish with deep ethnic roots—blending the Slovak heritage of SS. Cyril and Methodius with the East Side family character of St. James. Worshippers valued its small, traditional schedule (a single Sunday Mass, weekday Masses, and a weekly Holy Hour with the St. Jude Novena), its homemade Pirohy Kitchen, its Sacramental preparation for students at John F. Kennedy Catholic School, and its proximity and pastoral care under Fr. Christopher Cicero and the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate sisters. Today the parish's mission continues inside St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, where the St. James Church site still hosts its signature Sunday liturgy and devotional life.

Overview of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish was a parish of the Diocese of Youngstown located on the East Side of Warren, Ohio, at St. James Church, 2532 Burton St. SE. Formed in 2012 from the union of St. James and SS. Cyril and Methodius, the parish continued until July 2024, when it was merged into St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish. Its mission — ministering to all of God's people in loving imitation of Jesus — was rooted in the East End Warren community it served.

Parish History

The parish's story is the convergence of two East Side Warren Catholic communities. SS. Cyril and Methodius was founded in 1928 as the Slovak national parish; St. James was established in 1947 to serve the East End's growing post-war Catholic population. Bishop George V. Murry merged them in 2012 under the patronage of America's first native-born saint, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. In 2022, with the closure of SS. Cyril and Methodius, the parish consolidated at St. James. In 2024 the parish entered a wider Warren consolidation as part of St. Teresa of Calcutta.
