According to neighboring Holy Family Catholic Church's history, St. Edward the Confessor was carved from three existing parishes: Holy Family in Mitchellville, St. Mary's in Upper Marlboro, and Sacred Heart in Bowie. Its founding coincided with the Josephite Society's withdrawal from Holy Family and the rapid suburban growth of Bowie.
