Parish History
Catholic families were present in Proctor from 1844, walking over the mountain to St. Bridget's in West Rutland for Mass. By 1872 the local Catholic community had grown to about 40 families — split evenly between Irish and French-Canadian — and the St. Bridget's priest began visiting Proctor. Senator Redfield Proctor, then Vermont's governor and president of the Vermont Marble Company, donated land and marble for the first church in 1879, and the parishioners themselves, working after twelve-hour marble-mill shifts, raised the building completed in 1882. The parish was formally established in 1893 with Rev. Patrick J. Long as first resident pastor. The current St. Dominic church, built in 1926, is notable for stained glass windows each portraying a saint representing one of the six dominant nationalities of the congregation.

Architecture & Heritage
The 1926 St. Dominic church stands on Proctor's South Street and is built around a defining feature of its interior: a set of stained glass windows in which each lancet portrays a saint dedicated to one of the six dominant nationalities of the historic immigrant congregation. The earlier 1882 church — and the marble foundation donated by the Vermont Marble Company's Redfield Proctor — anchors the parish's identity to Proctor's marble-country industrial heritage.
