History of St. Dominic
The community that became St. Dominic Parish was first organized in 1942, when the Bishop of Grand Rapids sent Father Francis M. Schultz to serve the growing area. He acquired the building at 3860 S. Division Avenue and reopened it as a mission church under the patronage of St. John Vianney. For more than three decades the area's Catholic life was recorded under St. John Vianney's history.
- 1942: Father Francis M. Schultz begins mission work, opens church at 3860 S. Division Ave. under the patronage of St. John Vianney.
- January 17, 1974: Bishop Joseph M. Breitenbeck formally erects St. Dominic Parish.
- 1974: First Baptisms (Feb. 2), First Communions (May 19), first funeral (April 4), first wedding (April 7).
- 1975: First Confirmations on March 29.
- September 13, 1976: Bellevue Avenue property purchased from First Assembly of God Community.
- April 13, 1978: Parish takes possession of the Bellevue church building.
- November 1, 2018: Parish merged with Shrine of St. Francis Xavier & Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Grand Rapids; site continues as a pastoral center.
Mission Statement
St. Dominic's published mission statement reads: 'We, the people of the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Dominic, the People of God gathered in this community in Wyoming, Michigan, proclaim the living faith, grounded in the Sacred Scriptures and rooted in our ancient traditions. We strive to build a community of faith where each person is cared for as a child of God and a member of our extended family. We grow together on the journey of life supporting one another in prayer, stewardship, and through genuine outreach.'
Mass & Worship Schedule
The pastoral center offers daily Mass Monday through Friday at 8:30 a.m. in English, with a Spanish-language Mass each Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m., and the Saturday Vigil Mass at 4:30 p.m. Confessions are heard Saturday from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. (before the respective Masses).
