Why belong here

St. Dominic is a welcoming, bilingual parish serving Orland and the wider Glenn County farm community, with Mass offered in both English and Spanish every day of the week. Families can enroll children in religious education and youth ministry, and the parish maintains St. Mary Mission in Hamilton City so Catholics in outlying communities can worship close to home. Its roster of deacons, long priestly succession stretching back to 1884, and devoted ministries like adoration and Reconciliation reflect a century-plus tradition of shepherding the faithful in the north Sacramento Valley.

History of the Parish

The Catholic community in Orland traces its roots to 1884, when Father Michael Wallrath, pastor of St. Monica Parish in Willows, drew plans for a church in this growing farm community. Construction began October 13, 1884, on three lots donated by Mrs. J. W. Kendrick of Newville, and the first Mass was celebrated December 23, 1884, during the Christmas season. A mission of Willows for more than three decades, Saint Dominic was raised to parish status by Bishop Thomas Grace in 1918-1919, and Father William Coen became its first resident pastor in 1919.

  • 1884 — Original wooden church built; first Mass celebrated December 23.
  • 1918-1919 — Saint Dominic raised to parish status; Father William Coen first resident pastor.
  • 1919-1929 — Father Coen founds Catholic Cemetery and Saint Mary Mission in Hamilton City.
  • March 13, 1947 — Original church destroyed by fire.
  • September 25, 1949 — Bishop Robert Armstrong consecrates the current church.
