About St. Dennis · Tivoli, Texas
St. Dennis is a small Catholic mission chapel on the historic O'Connor River Ranch in Tivoli, Texas, about 20 miles outside Victoria. A mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Tivoli and part of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, it serves ranch families and visitors from the surrounding countryside with a single Saturday evening Mass. Built in 1951 and dedicated in 1952, the limestone, Spanish mission-style church was designed by renowned Texas restoration architect Raiford Stripling and funded by Kathryn Stoner O'Connor in thanksgiving for her Navy son's safe return from World War II. Replacing an earlier wood-frame St. Anthony chapel destroyed by a hurricane in 1942, St. Dennis remains an intimate, family-rooted sanctuary where 15 to 20 people typically gather — and on Christmas Eve, when the O'Connor clan returns from across the country, the little church fills up.

Why belong here
St. Dennis offers an unusually intimate and prayerful worship experience: a Saturday evening Mass preceded by a holy hour of Eucharistic Adoration, set on a working cattle ranch where horses, deer and wildlife share the landscape with the church. For Catholics who long for a smaller, more contemplative liturgy, or for those with family ties to the O'Connor Ranch, the mission provides a spiritual home deeply rooted in local history and thanksgiving. It is also a place of deep sacramental meaning for ranch families — generations of the DeLaGarza family have been baptized, received First Communion, been confirmed and married at St. Dennis.

History of St. Dennis Mission Chapel
St. Dennis traces its origins to the Catholic life of the O'Connor River Ranch in Tivoli, where ranch families had long worshipped at a small wood-frame church called St. Anthony Catholic Church. That earlier chapel was destroyed by a hurricane in 1942, and for nearly a decade the ranch community had no church of its own. After the war, Kathryn Stoner O'Connor — known as 'Miss Kate' — built the present limestone chapel in thanksgiving for her son's safe return from the Navy. Construction was completed in 1951 and the church was dedicated in 1952. The chapel has served the ranch continuously ever since and is now a mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Tivoli within the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

Architecture and Setting
Designed by Raiford Stripling — the dean of Texas restoration architecture, who also rebuilt Presidio La Bahía and Mission Espíritu Santo — St. Dennis is built of limestone in the Spanish mission style and looks as if it has stood on the O'Connor Ranch for centuries. Octagonal windows high on the walls flood the interior with natural light during the day, and a beautifully carved walnut pulpit stands in the front corner of the sanctuary. The surrounding ranch landscape — horses, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats and deer — gives the church a uniquely contemplative setting, and the building's intimate scale makes the Saturday liturgy especially prayerful.
- Architect: Raiford Stripling (San Augustine, Texas)
- Style: Spanish mission; limestone construction
- Distinctive features: octagonal clerestory windows, hand-carved walnut pulpit
- Setting: O'Connor River Ranch, Tivoli, Texas
Parish Community and Caretakers
St. Dennis is sustained by a small but deeply connected community of ranch families, retired caretakers and visitors from Victoria and Tivoli. Johnny and Aurora DeLaGarza, who worked for the O'Connor family for over four decades, serve as caretakers and assist the priest in setting up for Mass. Three couples on the ranch attend Mass regularly; a typical Saturday draws 15 to 20 people. On Christmas Eve, the chapel fills when the O'Connor family returns from across the country — the only day of the year the little church is full.
- Caretakers: Johnny and Aurora DeLaGarza
- Saturday attendance: typically 15-20 people
- Christmas Eve: full chapel with the extended O'Connor family
