Parish History

Catholic life in Wilsonville began with Mass celebrated aboard the St. Anthony Chapel railroad car by Pastor E.S. Olson, which traveled between Salem and Portland stopping monthly. In 1925 Bishop permission and a $1,000 grant from the Extension Society allowed the construction of a permanent church; 17 acres from 5th Street to the Willamette were donated by parishioner George Stangel. The church was dedicated in 1926 under Father J.H. Maloney, with a bell inscribed to St. Thérèse (canonized the same year) and an altar built by Francis Roos that holds a relic of St. Cyril.

  • Dedicated in 1926 under Father J.H. Maloney
  • 17 acres donated by George Stangel — riverside portion sold during the Depression by Father F.W. Thiele
  • Rectory moved onto site in 1927; removed in 1979 when church was expanded
  • Berger property (former chicken farm) purchased 1998, became Parish Office
  • Parish Hall constructed 2001, dedicated by Archbishop Vlazney on February 14, 2003

Growth from Mission to Parish

St. Cyril was a mission of St. Francis Parish in Sherwood starting in 1952, with each church having about 40 families. By the 1960s St. Cyril had grown to 100 families and needed two Sunday Masses; priests from Mount Benedict (Mount Angel) helped celebrate. In 1987 there were three Masses for 120 families, and by 1998 nearly 400 families were registered. The parish was re-established as a full-fledged parish in 1992 and reached 600 families by 2004.

  • 1952: mission status under St. Francis, Sherwood (~40 families)
  • 1960s: 100 families, two Sunday Masses, Mount Angel priests assisting
  • 1987: three Masses, 120 families
  • 1992: full-fledged parish status restored
  • 1998: ~400 families; 2004: 600 families
