About St. Cunegunda · Detroit, Michigan

St. Cunegunda is a historic Roman Catholic parish in southwest Detroit, Michigan, founded in 1927 to serve the city's Polish immigrant community and now a bilingual English/Spanish congregation. The current church building at 5900 St. Lawrence Street was completed in 1951 and features a striking mosaic in the sanctuary. Why belong here

St. Cunegunda offers a bilingual Catholic home on Detroit's southwest side, with weekly Mass offered in both English and Spanish and a Friday schedule that combines a 7:15 a.m. Mass, morning confessions, and a full eight hours of Eucharistic Adoration. As part of the SOLT Detroit Family of Parishes formed in 2022 with Most Holy Redeemer and St. Gabriel, parishioners are connected to a broader community shaped by the missionary Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity — a community devoted to prayer, evangelization, and serving those most in need. Visitors often note the striking sanctuary mosaic and the warm welcome of a parish that has served Detroit since 1927.

Welcome to St. Cunegunda Parish

St. Cunegunda is a historic Catholic parish in southwest Detroit that has served worshippers since 1927. Today the parish is bilingual — Sunday Mass is celebrated in English and Spanish — and is home to a striking mosaic in the sanctuary. As of July 1, 2022 the parish is part of the SOLT Detroit Family of Parishes under the One Pastor model, working alongside Most Holy Redeemer and St. Gabriel in the Archdiocese of Detroit's Southwest Vicariate.

Parish History

The parish was founded on August 3, 1927 with Rev. Alexander Wilczewski as its first pastor to serve Detroit's growing Polish immigrant population on the southwest side. The parish school opened in 1929 with the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters from Sylvania, Ohio, and the present church building was completed in 1951. Across the twentieth century the neighborhood changed dramatically, and the parish community today reflects Detroit's diverse population — with both continuing Polish heritage and a vibrant Latino presence. The fiftieth anniversary was celebrated in 1977 and the SOLT religious community has shepherded the parish since 2011.

The Patroness: St. Cunegunda (Święta Kinga of Poland)

The parish's namesake and patroness is Święta Kinga of Poland (March 5, 1224 – July 24, 1292), a medieval Polish princess later beatified and canonized, who is honored as patroness of Poland and Lithuania. Her feast day is celebrated on July 24.
